Official Circuit Dude Contest Thread

Hey, Circuit Dude fans!!

Have you heard that Circuit Dude is coming to Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android, along with a major update to the PC/macOS versions? To celebrate, I’m running a level design contest where you can win some cool prizes:

1st Place Prizes

:zap: Either an Arduboy or BittBoy
:zap: Your level featured in the Circuit Dude update as an extra level
:zap: Download code for Circuit Dude for Steam or Nintendo Switch

2nd Place Prizes

:zap: Your level featured in the Circuit Dude update as an extra level
:zap: Download code for Circuit Dude for Steam or Nintendo Switch

How To Enter

Download Circuit Dude for the Arduboy, BittBoy, PocketGo, or LDK Game, and use the in-game level editor to create your own level that you think is fun, challenging, sneaky, or wacky! If you’re using the Arduboy version, download the Circuit Dude Level Tool for PC and use that to transfer the level to your PC. Next, save it as a .DUDE file. If you have the BittBoy, PocketGo, or LDK Game version, save the level and find it on the SD card under /games/CircuitDude/customlevels/ . Find the .DUDE file and transfer it to your computer.

Once you have the .DUDE file, send it over to me through e-mail! My e-mail is: crait.is@gmail.com . Be sure to include your name or alias that I can use if you happen to win!

As soon as I start getting entries, I’ll be uploading them to my site for others to play and leave feedback on! I’ll also be updating this thread with every entry.

Don’t forget to give me a shout-out on Twitter to let me know that you’ve entered the contest!

How To Enter

The contest ends on September 20th, 2019 at 5PM, Texas time! (2019-09-20T22:00:00Z) Please, only 2 entries per person. All serious levels will be made available on the contest site and on the Arduboy forum for free. I will be picking my favorite 2 levels, based on whether they are interesting, hard, fun, etc. I will pick a winner on September 22nd at 5PM!

Is the PC / Nintendo Switch and other platforms the same screen dimensions (number of tiles) as the Arduboy?

Those versions have 1 extra row of tiles that will be made of blocks to ensure compatibility.

Texas has two time zones, mountain and central…

Mountain time is fake news.

Actually, a lot of people say “Texas Time” to mean Central. At least, from the folks I’ve been around. :yum:

Mountain, Central, Eastern… none of it means anything to me.
Might as well be talking about Brunel Darussalam time or Further-Eastern European Time.

UTC-05:00 on the otherhand I can understand perfectly.
Which means I can do this: 2019-09-20T22:00:00Z.
Which I can then edit into the main post so people can see the deadline in their local time.

What about us Arduboy users with a Mac? Should we make a level on the Arduboy and then ship it to you?

This is one of the reasons I was hoping the format would be documented somewhere.
If it were documented then someone could write an editor that works on all platforms.

(I started trying to disect it once but lost interest because I wasn’t sure how much demand there would be. C# code is really easy to reverse engineer, you can practically reconstitute the entire program from the generated IL.)

Technically it’s possible to get a C# programming running on Mac, but I think you’d need to use Wine or use Mono, or rewrite the program to use GTK# instead of Windows forms.

Unfortunately only @crait has the source code so it would be up to him to recompile it for Mac.

It is easier said that done… This could go into its own thread, but just a quick explanation is that I am working on a web-based solution. I could not get Mono or GTK# to work on my computer or to incorporate the USB communication the right way.

For now, a macOS Arduboy user can send me a picture in and I will turn it into a .DUDE file.

I sent my entry. I have to say that the editor and companion app are outstanding! excellent work, really professional.

PS: It would be nice that the level has an extra flag “valid” :stuck_out_tongue: that forces the user to solve it at least once to save.

Oh, wow… Thank you… That makes me feel so warm…

Oh, the full version will do this if you want to share the level online, but the reason the Arduboy doesn’t is because there’s sometimes when I just wanna edit a level and work on it a bit later on.

I must admit I haven’t played any of these new levels but I love that people are contributing to the game. Great work!
